Clonal Selection
Clonally selected, site-specific, cool climate wine paradigms from apposite noble grapes i.e. ones with the ability to produce world-class examples. Picked exclusively from parcels of grapes within Elgin.
SA’s coolest wine district, Elgin Valley, reflected these principles enabling the germane grapes, Chardonnay, Syrah and more recently Pinot Noir, to show a sense of place.

G.P.S. Series - Grape Positioning System
Exploring exemplary parcels of vines from outside the Elgin region.
Occasionally, I come across something so fascinating that it deserves a closer look. These are the resultant wines of my curiosity.

Deconstructed Range
Single site, soil and clone wines from Elgin.

The inspiration for these Deconstructed wines stems from my belief that the Elgin region boasts credentials that make it world-class.

In order to bolster these regional credentials, my personal mandate has been to prove Elgin has both a signature grape that is synonymous with the region as well as particular ‘terroirs’/meso-climates within its demarcated boundary that reflect regional distinctions.

To fully comprehend this, it is, therefore, necessary to dig deeper into the nuances/DNA that makes up our region. To initiate this, I have decided to make these wines that have been selected from a sub-region of Elgin from a specific vineyard and an individual clone.

Due to the small volumes made, this wine is allocated to our wine club members and selected restaurants.

The Smuggler's Boot
The Smuggler’s Boot wines were first released in 2014. The name derives from the time of trade embargoes in South Africa when growers & winemakers smuggled grapevine material into the country by hiding the cuttings in Wellington boots.
The Smuggler’s Boot range celebrates that ingenuity.
These are from interesting blocks of vineyards that were unknowns, often quite young, new blocks taken on for the first time and blocks that had some curiosity and that piqued my interest. They became my experimental range.

All small volumes, they are often matured in eggs, ceramics or amphoras. Something a bit different as we play around with these wines.
