Clonal selection elgin
purity, focus and freshness
100% Pinot Noir made from French clones PN777, PN115, and PN113.
Captivating floral attributes underscored by purity, focus and freshness framed by fine powder tannins yet cushioned by a succulent texture and flavours of black cherry, pomegranate, rose petal and raspberry.
Selected from 7 tiny parcels of Pinot Noir.
The wine spent around 10-11 months undergoing maturation. During this period each and every barrel was tasted every 6 weeks and notes and scores logged to better understand our knowledge of clonal, soil and barrel selection. No finings were generally necessary, and the wine was simply racked and lightly filtered prior to bottling.
A small number of artisanal coopers were selected, all from Burgundy and only French oak was chosen. Importantly, each clone and soil type was micro vinified as separate batches. Each batch used an algorithm that we have developed to ascertain which coopers work best and how many new and used barrels were utilised. Overall, the average in 2019 was 22.4% new oak; 71.9% 228 l, 8.6% 300 l; 7.2% 500 l and 12.5% in breathable eggs.

Platter's Wine Guide 2022
Elgin Pinot at its most charming. 2019 has gorgeous bright cherry fragrance with a little forest floor complexity, the ripe fruit purity balanced by silky texture & freshening tannins. A quiet intensity & compelling sweet-fruited persistence add to overall refinement & appeal. Tops already stellar 2018.
-Angela Lloyd, Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2022
Clonal combines five different Burgundy clones (113, 114, 115, 667 and 777) from five blocks, most of which are in the western side of Elgin. Combining perfume with acidity and fruit concentration, it's a very complete wine, with stony undertones, fine oak and textured plum and strawberry fruit. 2022-27.
-Tim Atkin MW, South Africa Report 2021
The 2019 Pinot Noir Clonal Selection Elgin has a detailed nose, a mélange of red and black fruit, iodine and pressed iris flower. The palate is medium bodied with supple tannins, a velvety smooth texture and a touch of white pepper and clove. Gains weight toward the finish, which retains commendable elegance and feels almost Volnay-like on the peppery aftertaste. Excellent! *93/100
