Mid to deep ruby, the 2021 Clonal Selection opens with intense dark plum, pine forest, Indian pepper tree, chocolate and fynbos spice with a crushed rock edge.

Medium-bodied, the entry is alive with vibrant pinpoint bright acidity, giving a firm spine to the wine and fantastic freshness and purity to this Pinot-style Syrah!

Complex flavours start with sauna wood, dark cherry, liquorice, and ripe black plum, then morph into pine nuts, button mushroom, dark chocolate and peat. These seem dusted by crushed black peppercorns, coffee grinds and baking spices.

Richly textured and concentrated, the mid-palate has a sultry quality that exudes finesse, whilst the tannins have a firm, mineral-charged tension that drives them forward. Phenomenally long, the wine unwinds slowly in the glass, and the gentle oak nuances that sit in the background will take 1-2 years to integrate further, so it will reward cellaring.

Selected from 5 small parcels of Syrah.

This Syrah went through a 17-month maturation. No finings were necessary, and the wine was simply racked and bottled unfiltered.

A small number of artisanal coopers were selected from Burgundy and Rhone, with only French oak chosen. Importantly, each clone and soil type were micro-vinified as separate batches. Each batch used an algorithm that we have developed to ascertain which coopers work best and how many new and used barrels are utilised.

Overall, the average in 2021 was 40% new oak matured in 6 barriques, 1 Puncheon and the rest in breathable eggs.

A mix of three clones - SH9c, 22 and 99 - are used on this Syrah from a combination of cartref, shale and gravel soils. Fine, granular and perfumed, with adroitly handled 40% new wood, subtle reduction, plum and red cherry fruit and some underlying grip. Classy stuff. 2024-30.
